LOGLINE:
At a dinner she’d rather not be at, with a family she loves and cannot stand, Jamie watches her best friend, Michael – the man she’s in love with – announce his engagement to her sister, Billy.
SYNOPSIS:
Table for One is a dark comedy drama short about all the things we don’t say and everything we lose because of it. Jamie arrives late to a family dinner she’s been dreading, armed with a lethal wit and a desperation to survive it. Trapped amid years of bitter history, and forced to watch the man she secretly loves sit comfortably beside her sister, she narrates the evening’s slow unravelling to the camera: her only confidant in a room full of people who don’t truly see her. But as the boundaries between reality, memory, and performance begin to blur, Table for One explores the quiet tragedy of fear dictating silence, and the regret left in its wake.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:
Table for One began with a cake.
I’m someone who is heavily influenced by my own experiences: my upbringing, the people I surround myself with, and the strangers whose small moments I get to witness from the other side of a restaurant pass.
While working my job in hospitality, I watched a man had bring in a cake that read: Will you be my girlfriend? Towards the end of their meal, I carried it out to their table. The answer was no.
There were quiet giggles behind closed kitchen doors. There was the undeniable sting of rejection. The surge of second-hand embarrassment. But he had done it. He had stood in the face of fear and said the thing.
It made me think about all the things I hadn’t said.
I try to live with very few regrets, but the ones I do carry are never about the things I did, but, rather, the things I didn’t: the risks I didn’t take, the words I didn’t say, the moments I let slip by until someone else decided them for me. Jamie came from that feeling – the feeling of letting fear make the decision and then living inside the consequences of that silence.
While this is not my story, I think, at some point, we’ve all felt a profound disconnection from our own lives.
My ultimate hope is that Table for One leaves you a little less alone in whatever loneliness you may be feeling, and a little less burdened by your regrets. When the credits roll, I hope you feel something shift, and the door that once felt impossible to open feels possible to walk through. And if nothing else, I hope it gives you the courage to let go. Just as Jamie does.
